Bat Pest Control
Posted on February 9, 2011 by Dana
Though bats can prove helpful given to their ability to eat a lot of insects, they can prove to be quite a bother when they enter into houses and even pose to be a health hazard. Bats that enter homes are mostly young bats that have strayed from their colonies. Most bats enter households during late summer, as this is the time when young bats learn to fly.
Though not really dangerous animals, bats can cause illnesses because they often carry the germs of rabies and Histoplasmosis, which is a fungal disease caused by inhalation of the dust of bat and bird droppings.
The first that one should do after a bat has entered into the house is open doors and windows so that the bat can escape. It is best to do this once it gets dark outside. In case that is not possible, one must always wear thick gloves when doing bat pest control. Though they do not get aggressive when they are chased, but bats, like any other animal, often bite when caught.
The safest bet is to place a big can over the bat and push it within it. Any wide mouthed jar can also be used. Once the bat is inside the can, the mouth should be covered with cardboard or thick paper. The vessel can then be taken outside and the bat can be gently released into the wild. One must be careful to not try and catch bats when they are flying because that can injure the animal.
In case one is unable to catch the bat by himself or herself, it is best to call the local wildlife office which is equipped to successfully catch the animal. If the bat is hurt or injured, one must contact the local humane or wildlife sanctuary office.
